Report: EU Green Week stakeholder event
Index Initiative organized a seminar in Brussel on the 31st of May, 2017 to gather stakeholders’ perspectives on the role of oil and gas companies in greening the energy system and to consult stakeholders on actions that oil and gas companies can take to advance Sustainable Development Goal 13 (climate action). Representatives from the European Parliament, investors, civil society, the research community and energy companies participated in this seminar. The seminar was hosted by the Brussels office of Burson- Marsteller and facilitated by Karel Beckman, owner and editor of the news provider Energy Post.
This seminar built on a one year period of research and stakeholder consultations carried out by Index Initiative with support of the Dutch government. During this period Index Initiative assessed the feasibility of developing industry-focused climate action benchmarks, the benchmark focused on the oil and gas industry being one of them. The aim of this seminar was threefold: to discuss 1) what different stakeholders expect of oil and gas companies in relation to SGD 13 – climate action; 2) what stakeholders expect of a climate action benchmark and 3) potential criteria that could be part of a benchmark focusing on the decarbonization of oil and gas companies.
